PS261 students of all grades are invited to contribute their voices, opinions, and works of literature to the school newsletter and the library blog!
Students can share important school news, topical pieces, art, fiction, poetry, comics, quizzes, and questions. We have two student’s offering advice for our student advice column as well. Inspired and aspiring students can submit their articles to Ms. Vanessa in the library (or in her box in the main office). Not all submitted pieces will be published and they may be subjected to some editing for length or clarity. We will try to include as much student work as possible. Please include students’ full names, grade, and classroom on every submission. Note: April is National Poetry Month, we will be featuring student poetry. Poetry will be prioritized for April’s publication. I can’t wait for the wave of creative work heading my way! Happy creating! -Ms. Vanessa Librarian PS261 P.S. Students are welcome to work on pieces in the library during lunch and during open access hours.

Summer reading is an essential part of a full year of learning
Students can lose 2-3 months of learning over the summer by not reading. Don’t let your child fall behind. Research suggests that at least 20 minutes of reading per day will help maintain reading levels over the summer.* For some kids, reading is its own reward. For other kids, rewards help to motivate them. Here are some programs: PS 261 Summer Reading Challenge! Read 20 mins a day (or more) for 10 weeks to improve reading skills. Readers should read a minimum of 3-5 picture books/week or 100-150 pages of chapter books (roughly 3-5 books depending on length). Log your books here, sign and bring in forms in September for a party! Any format of log signed by adult is acceptable. How many books can you read in 10 weeks? 50% of our challenge goal can be met with read alouds or audiobooks
Other incentive programs: Brooklyn Public Library - Make sure you have a PS 261 MylibraryNYC card for no late borrowing fines (take application to any branch and write down your pin for ebooks and other online services). 1) Complete board game for raffle of free books. 2) Adults, enter your child's library card number to register at beanstalks to complete book reviews for tablet raffle. Barnes & Noble – for students going into grades 1-5. Read 6 books and get a free book. Chuck E. Cheese – Earn free tokens when your child fills in a form for reading every day for 2 weeks. A food purchase is required. Scholastic Summer Challenge – Children can log in their reading minutes online and earn rewards like online badges. There are games and features to keep kids interested in books. Adults - make sure your kids have lots of things they love to read. Research shows that access and enjoyment are the most important factors for getting kids to read a lot!
